    Preventive Dentistry

    Preventive Dentistry Services We Offer:

    • Dental Cleanings

Regular dental cleanings are important for your oral health. Because even if you brush and floss every day, it can sometimes not be enough. Professional dental cleanings can help remove plaque and tartar buildup that you might miss in your daily oral routine.

Seeing your dentist for a checkup twice a year can help catch problems early before they become bigger and more expensive to fix.

    • Dental Exams

Your teeth are important as they work hard every single day, helping you eat, talk, and swallow. It’s easy to forget to take good care of them, but ignoring your oral health can lead to serious problems.

Don’t wait until you have a dental emergency. Regular checkups and cleanings can help prevent problems and keep your teeth and gums healthy.

    • Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a quick and easy way to protect your teeth. They’re a thin coating that we apply to the chewing surfaces of your molars to help prevent cavities.

Before we apply sealants, we’ll make sure your teeth are clean and cavity-free. We’ll clean out any grooves or pits in your teeth to remove any bacteria or debris.

Sealants can be a great way to keep your teeth healthy and strong, and this entire process takes less than 30 minutes.

    • Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatments are a quick and easy way to protect your teeth. They involve applying a special coating to your teeth that helps prevent cavities.

Our dental experts can apply fluoride in a few different ways. They can either use a brush or cotton swab to apply a foam, gel, or varnish to your teeth, or they can recommend that you use fluoride mouthwash.

If my teeth feel fine and I don't see any cavities, do I still need a dental exam?

Yes, and for a very important reason: dental issues like gum disease, bone loss, and early-stage cavities often don’t have “feeling” until they are quite advanced. By the time a tooth starts to hurt, the treatment is usually more complex, like a root canal or crown. During a preventive exam at Next Care Dental, Dr. Patel and Dr. Vu look for microscopic changes in your enamel and gums that you can’t see in the mirror, allowing us to fix small problems before they turn into expensive emergencies.

Is there a difference between "tartar" and "plaque," and why can't I just brush it off?

It’s a common mix-up! Plaque is the soft, sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth every day; you can remove most of this with a toothbrush. However, if plaque isn’t removed within about 24 to 48 hours, it minerals and hardens into tartar (calculus). Tartar is essentially like “concrete” on your teeth it cannot be brushed or flossed away at home. Only a professional dental cleaning using specialized ultrasonic tools can safely remove tartar to prevent it from irritating your gums and causing bone loss.

I’m an adult; are dental sealants only for children's molars?

While we frequently apply sealants to children’s permanent molars as they erupt, adults can absolutely benefit from them too. If you have deep “pits” or grooves on your chewing surfaces that haven’t been filled yet, they are prone to trapping bacteria regardless of your age. As long as the tooth is free of decay, applying a sealant is a fast, 30-minute way to “surface-level” those deep grooves, making your daily brushing much more effective.

I already use fluoride toothpaste; is an in-office fluoride treatment necessary?

Think of an in-office fluoride treatment as a “high-performance” version of your home care. The fluoride varnish we apply at the clinic is much more concentrated than what you find in a tube of toothpaste. It creates a temporary shield that helps “re-mineralize” weak spots in your enamel. This is especially helpful for patients with a history of frequent cavities, those with dry mouth, or anyone with exposed tooth roots that are sensitive to cold.

Why does the dental hygienist "poke" my gums and call out numbers during the exam?

That process is called periodontal probing. We are measuring the “pocket depth” or the space between your tooth and the gum tissue. Healthy gums usually measure 1 to 3 millimeters. If we call out 4s or 5s, it’s a sign that the gums are pulling away due to inflammation or infection. Catching these “deep pockets” early through preventive checkups is the only way to reverse gingivitis before it turns into permanent gum disease.

Can professional cleanings actually help with chronic bad breath (halitosis)?

In the vast majority of cases, yes. Chronic bad breath is often caused by sulfur-producing bacteria hiding in places your toothbrush can’t reach specifically deep between the teeth and under the gum line. A professional cleaning removes these bacterial colonies and the hardened tartar they live in. If you’ve been relying on mouthwash to mask odors, a preventive visit to our Westheimer office can help us find and eliminate the actual source of the smell.
