What’s Included in a Dental Exam?

A dental exam is a full check of your teeth, gums, bite and jaw by the dentist. It includes:

  • Checks for cavities, gum disease, and cracked or worn teeth
  • Checks for bite problems and signs of oral cancer
  • A review of your X-rays
  • A plain explanation of what we found and your options

If you need treatment, you get a written plan with the price before anything is done. Learn more about our dental exams.

What’s Included with X-Rays?

The $99 exam includes bitewing X-rays, which show the areas between your back teeth, and a panoramic X-ray, which shows your whole mouth and jaw in one image. Those are all the X-rays the exam needs, so there are no extra X-ray charges. We use digital X-rays you can see on screen right away.

$99 Exam + X-Rays: What You Get

For $99 you get a complete exam by the dentist, plus bitewing and panoramic X-rays. The visit takes about 45 minutes. The price is the same for new and existing patients, and there’s no age limit. It doesn’t include a cleaning or any treatment. Those are priced separately and quoted before we start.

$59 Emergency Exam

An emergency exam is $59. It includes a panoramic X-ray, a single-tooth X-ray and a problem-focused exam of the tooth or area that’s bothering you. It’s for toothaches, broken or chipped teeth, swelling, a lost filling or crown, and other urgent problems. We do our best to see emergency patients the same day, Monday through Friday, and walk-ins are welcome. If you need treatment, we’ll explain your options and give you the price first. See Emergency Dental Care.

Does Insurance Cover Dental Exams?

Most PPO dental plans cover routine exams and X-rays, often at little or no cost to you, but it depends on your plan. We accept most PPO plans, Medicare Advantage plans from Humana, Aetna, UHC Dual Complete, Wellcare, SCAN and Cigna, and Texas Medicaid for children. We check your insurance before any work starts. If you have insurance, your visit goes through your plan. The $99 and $59 prices are for self-pay patients only. See Insurance & Financing.

No Insurance? What to Expect

Without insurance you pay $99 for an exam with X-rays, or $59 for an emergency exam. You’ll know that price before you come in. If the dentist recommends treatment, we’ll give you the full cost first so you can decide. For larger treatment, you can apply for financing through CareCredit, Sunbit or Cherry. See Financial Options.

Not sure which exam you need? Call or text and we’ll help you choose.

What Can Change the Cost?

The exam price stays the same. Your total changes only if you add something to it:

  • Insurance. If you use insurance, your plan decides what you pay, and the self-pay prices don’t apply.
  • Treatment the exam finds. Fillings, crowns, deep cleanings, root canals, extractions, dentures and other care are quoted before they’re done. Nothing is done without your OK.
  • Cleaning. A routine cleaning isn’t part of the exam price. Ask us for the price when you book.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Plan for about 45 minutes.

  • X-rays. Quick digital bitewing and panoramic X-rays.
  • Exam. The dentist checks your teeth, gums, bite and jaw, and reviews your X-rays with you.
  • Your plan. You get a clear explanation of what we found and the cost of any treatment before you decide.
